Roof Hail Damage: What To Do After a Hailstorm

Colorado is notorious for hailstorms, which is why homeowners should know what to do if they experience roof hail damage. When the shingles on a roof are damaged during a hailstorm, it not only causes damage to the entire house, but it can also reduce the value of the home.

If not fixed, hail damaged roofs can lead to issues, such as interior leaks, deterioration, and further damage to the home. Once your roof has a leak, water can drip onto the walls, floors, and ceiling of your home, causing severe damage to the structure. This can leave you with costly repair bills that are far beyond the original price to fix the roof. It is literally the roof over your families head, and that is why it’s so important to repair your hail damaged roof before it’s too late.

If you think you may have damage, you should follow the three steps below. These steps will help you check for issues, get the help you need, and ensure your house is safe from further destruction.

Oh Hail No?!?! Now What??

1. Determine If You Have Hail Damage

It’s important to inspect both the interior and exterior of your home after a big storm. To inspect the inside of your home, start with the corners and look for any leaks, slow drips, or water stains.  Also, walk around the perimeter of your house to see if there’s any damage to the roof, shingles, gutters, windows, trim and/or siding. Look carefully for any dents, cracks or broken/missing pieces of shingles.

2. Call Your Insurance Company

If you’ve determined there is hail damage, you should reach out to your insurance company directly to file the claim. They will ask you for a storm date and generally after a big storm, the insurance company will have a surplus of calls, so please be patient as it might take some time for an adjuster to review your claim. Make sure to review your policy and endorsements before you file the claim.

3. Call a Home Restoration Company

Once your claim has been adjusted and approved, it’s time to get your home fixed! There are plenty of fly-by-night, home restoration companies out there, so it’s important to find the right one. You should choose a company that has the following qualities:

1. Great Reviews

If you find a company with great reviews, it will make the decision easier. A company that offers great customer service will make you feel better about your situation and you can trust that they’re actually invested in their work.

2. Local to Your Area

It’s important to choose a local company because they will be close by if any warranty issues come up. Some companies also charge a travel fee, which can tack on unnecessary charges to your bill.

3. Offers More than Roof Repair

Rather than just looking for a roof restoration company, it can be beneficial to find someone who has experience in more than just roofs since your damage may include, siding, windows, gutters, painting and much more. They should check the entire home for further damage or issues to ensure the house and infrastructure is in optimal condition.
